Why Do People Lie?
Lying is not good thing. However, people lie often because of various reasons. People often lie in order to be respected by other people. By lying, a person tries to hide his or her own failure and save honor. On the other hand, at other times, someone may lie in the cause of sympathy.For example, if a person is invited to have some tea but he or she doesn't want to go with the person that invited him or her, he or she may say, "I'm very sorry but I can't go with you because of my job." In this way, this person can turn down the proposal politely and avoid hurting the other's feeling. Therefore, it can be said that lying is sometimes for oneself and sometimes for others.

I agree to your idea of lie, in particular the sympathetic lie. I often have the situation where I tell a white lie. Although I lie to my friends in your example situation, I want them to disclose the truth in order to know their mind. How about you?

As Mai wrote, I sometimes tell lies in order to keep good atmosphere or not to make friends sad. There is a old saying "usomohouben" in Japan. This means lies are necessary, I think.
